Lordina Mahama emphasises the role of women in building society and the family at the 40th anniversary of the EP Church Women’s Ministry in Ho.

2024-07-02

Former First Lady Mrs Lordina Dramani Mahama on Sunday joined the Women’s Ministry of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church for a thanksgiving service in Ho to commemorate its 40th anniversary.

Mrs Mahama, the Special Guest of Honour, emphasised the integral role women play in society. She spoke about raising children and building good homes, resonating with the anniversary theme, ‘Caring for God’s Creation; The Role of Women's Ministry'.

She urged women to consider their responsibilities as sacred duties to God and humanity, reinforcing the value and respect they deserve.

She highlighted the remarkable achievements of many Ghanaian women who have, over the years, shattered the glass ceiling and risen to prominence, such as Rt. Hon. Joyce Adeline Bamford-Addo, the first female Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament. These women, Mrs Mahama noted, serve as a powerful inspiration for young girls and women, demonstrating that with determination and resilience, any goal can be achieved.

She commended her husband, John Dramani Mahama, for his confidence in women and for selecting Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang for the second time as his running mate and, hopefully, the first female Vice President of Ghana.

She added that Mr Mahama has demonstrated inclusiveness and trust in women as equally capable candidates for leadership through his actions.

Mrs Mahama, the founder and president of the Lordina Foundation, advocated for equal opportunities for women to reach their full potential, asserting that women are more than capable of excelling at any level of leadership.

She urged women to lead the effort to promote peace and unity before, during and after the December elections. According to her, violence and conflicts must be avoided, as history has shown that women and children are most affected by electoral violence.

The leadership of the Church offered prayers for the Mahama family and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
